An unidentified woman's body was recovered from a sandbar in the Dudhkumar River in Kurigram's Bhurungamari upazila on Friday evening, with police suspecting it may have been washed downstream from India during the recent floods.

The body was found on a river char in Khochabari area under Tilai Union. Authorities believe it may have become stranded there after being carried by floodwaters.

Local Union Parishad Chairman Kamruzzaman said he informed Bhurungamari Police Station after residents reported the body. Police later recovered the remains from the scene.

Officer-in-Charge Azim Uddin of Bhurungamari Police Station said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, making it impossible to identify any visible injury marks or determine the victim's religious identity.

He said police suspect the deceased may have been an Indian national, as no reports of a missing woman matching the description have been received locally.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) contacted India's Jhaukuti Border Security Force (BSF) camp regarding the body.

However, the BSF declined to receive it due to procedural complications. The body will be sent to the Kurigram morgue for an autopsy on Sunday morning before being handed over to the local chapter of Anjuman Mufidul Islam for burial if it remains unidentified.
