A 26-foot-wide road is being developed in the Ghuntighar area of Gandaria in the capital following the eviction of illegal structures previously used as drug dens.
The eviction drive along the railway line is progressing, with most of the illegal structures cleared to make way for the road. The project is expected to improve local access and strengthen law enforcement patrols in the area.
Dhaka-6 MP Ishraque Hossain shared the information with journalists after visiting Ghuntighar on Monday.
He said drug dens had developed along nearly 2.5 kilometres of railway land, where drug consumption, sales and other illegal activities took place. The eviction drive has already begun in the Shyampur section.
Over the past two weeks, the drive has created conditions for constructing the 26-foot-wide road, he said, adding that the removal of a few remaining structures was still pending. Most of them are illegal and temporary.
Once completed, the road will connect different neighbourhoods and make movement easier for residents. It will also improve access for emergency vehicles, including ambulances.
Ishraque said plans were also in place to install streetlights and CCTV cameras along the road. These measures are expected to facilitate regular law enforcement patrols and help curb drug-related activities.
He said residents of wards 45 and 46 under Dhaka-6, as well as the wider Gandaria area, would benefit from the initiative. Several educational institutions in the area had been affected by the spread of drugs, which had also reached residential neighbourhoods.
The MP said drug spots across his constituency would be dismantled in phases, stressing the need for coordinated efforts by residents, public representatives and law enforcement agencies.
He added that regular police patrols had previously been difficult because of the lack of road access. The new road would help overcome that limitation.
Ishraque also said State Minister for Railways and Dhaka-9 MP Habibur Rahman Habib was assisting with the road construction work.
Dhaka South City BNP Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, the deputy commissioner of police for the Wari zone, officers-in-charge of Gandaria and Shyampur police stations and other officials were present during the visit.
