Industrial growth key to economy: finance adviser

Finance Adviser Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said there is no alternative to industrial development for strengthening Bangladesh's economy, adding that the government is working to resolve the sector's longstanding challenges.

Speaking to reporters after separate meetings with leaders of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) and the Saudi Arabia-Bangladesh Chamber at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) headquarters in Agargaon on Thursday, he said the government would continue regular dialogue with business leaders to identify and address industry concerns.

He said several issues raised by BTMA had been resolved immediately, while the remaining proposals would be considered by the government.

The finance adviser said the government wanted to make local industries more competitive through continued deregulation and by removing barriers to doing business, describing the industrial sector as the foundation of sustainable economic growth and employment generation.

He also said discussions were held on expanding trade with Saudi Arabia, developing skilled manpower and exploring alternative sources of financing as part of the government's efforts to diversify its financing framework.

Responding to a question about the new budget, Amir Khasru declined to comment, saying with a smile, "You will judge the budget. How can I?"

Expressing optimism over revenue collection, he said the National Board of Revenue was well prepared to meet its target for the current fiscal year.
