A businessman was killed and another man sustained severe burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded in a motor spare parts shop in Bangshal area in the capital on Friday.
Deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, 35, and injured one as Nazmul Hossain, 33.
The explosion occurred in Shia Goli area along Mukim Bazar Road at about 4:30am.
Shop staff Md Hamidul Islam who took the victims to hospital, said the explosion occurred suddenly inside the shop. During the blast, a heavy object fell on Delwar's head, injuring him critically.
Locals informed the Fire Services. Delwar and Nazmul were taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared Delwar dead.
Delwar was son of Abdul Khalek of Sharsha Upazila in Jashore district. He would run the motor parts shop. He is survived by one child.
Nazmul, who is Delwar's cousin, is currently undergoing treatment at the burn unit of DMCH. Doctors said his condition is now out of danger.
Md Faruk, inspector in-charge of the police camp at DMCH, confirmed the death.
Delwar's body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy, and Bangshal Police Station has been informed of the incident, the official added.
