A total of 140 stranded residents returned to St Martin's Island from Teknaf on Saturday after three wooden service trawlers resumed limited operations despite rough seas.
The trawlers left Kayukkhali jetty in Teknaf around 11:30am, carrying the passengers along with essential food supplies. After a nearly four-hour journey across the 36-kilometre sea route, they reached St Martin's safely at around 3:00pm.
Passenger and regular vessel services on the Teknaf-St Martin's route had remained suspended for the past 10 days due to rough weather and Local Warning Signal No. 3, leaving more than 150 island residents stranded in Teknaf while seeking medical treatment, shopping and other urgent services.
Acting Chairman of St Martin's Union Parishad, Faizul Islam, confirmed the safe arrival of the trawlers.
Ward member Mahfuza Akter said the Upazila administration permitted the transport of the stranded residents and essential food supplies to the island.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) S M Anik Chowdhury said food assistance for around 300 families on the island was also sent with the trawlers.
"The passengers travelled safely under the monitoring of a Bangladesh Coast Guard vessel," he said, adding that the overall situation on the island remained stable and the administration was continuing to monitor conditions.
He also said Local Warning Signal No. 3 had already been withdrawn.
