An alleged attempt by India's Border Security Force (BSF) to push three people, including two women, into Bangladesh through the Joypurhat border early Saturday was thwarted by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) with the support of local residents. A subsequent flag meeting between the two border forces ended without any resolution, as both sides refused to accept responsibility for the individuals.
An alleged attempt by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to push three people, including two women, into Bangladesh through the West Ramkrishnapur border in Joypurhat Sadar upazila was foiled early Saturday following prompt action by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local villagers.
According to BGB and local sources, the incident occurred at around 4:00 am when BSF personnel allegedly forced the three individuals across the border into Bangladeshi territory. Local residents intercepted them after they entered the area and immediately informed the BGB.
A BGB patrol team quickly reached the scene, took a firm position along the border, and escorted the three individuals back to the Indian side of the frontier while maintaining close surveillance.
One of the three has been identified as 65-year-old Hafizur Rahman, a resident of Narail district in Bangladesh. The identities of the two accompanying women could not be confirmed.
A flag meeting between the BGB and BSF was held around noon near sub-pillar 8 of border pillar 175 to resolve the issue.
The meeting was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Mamun, commanding officer of BGB-14 Battalion in Patnitala, Naogaon, and Commandant Gurinder Singh of India's 123 Battalion BSF.
The hour-long meeting ended without any agreement after both sides reportedly refused to accept the three individuals. Following the meeting, the BGB kept the individuals on the Indian side of the border while intensifying patrols in the area.
As of the filing of this report, the three individuals were still seen waiting near the border.
