The death toll from Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes has risen to 4,490, with 16,740 people injured, according to an official government update on Sunday.
The government also said 19,583 people displaced by the June 24 quakes are now living in temporary camps after the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes devastated Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira.
Authorities have begun plans to relocate affected families, with National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez saying some families will soon receive apartments that were already under construction before the disaster. The government has also allocated more than 40 plots of land in La Guaira for new housing projects.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said a humanitarian aid shipment from Russia had arrived, while the US Embassy announced it had delivered 100,000 aid kits to affected communities.
