Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the country does not have the number of trees it needs, announcing a nationwide initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years.
The prime minister made the announcement while inaugurating the National Tree Plantation Programme in Gournadi, Barishal, on Monday.
He said the country's tree cover remains below the required level and emphasized that the large-scale afforestation initiative aims to combat the impacts of climate change, protect the environment, and make Bangladesh greener.
The prime minister noted that climate change has already altered rainfall patterns, with the country now experiencing heavier rainfall than in previous years.
"There is no alternative to extensive tree plantation to maintain ecological balance."
