The government has issued specific and coordinated directive aimed at restraining the excessive rise of battery-run rickshaws and easy-bikes across the capital. It also targets severe traffic congestion and road accidents.

The government has already taken several steps to ensure a modern multimodal transport system in Dhaka. Trails are underway on how to properly manage and control these vehicles.

Road Transport Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam informed the national parliament about the reforms.

Inside the parliament, the minister was responding to a supplementary question. The question came from reserved women's seat MP Shawkat Ara Akter under Rule 71. She had raised an urgent notice of public importance.

MP Shawkat Ara Akter, in her notice, proposed converting all public transport to electric or eco-friendly fuel. She said this would help reduce the country's rising carbon emissions. It would also address climate change risks.

Responding to the question, the Road Transport and Bridges Minister said these vehicles within Dhaka metropolitan area are mainly controlled by the City Corporation and Traffic Division. He said the Communications Ministry has limited scope for direct intervention there.

However, he said the government is not sitting idle. It is working to resolve Dhaka's overall traffic congestion and modernize the transport system. High-level trials are underway on disciplined management and effective control of battery-run rickshaws.

He said a specific policy and directive will be issued soon. This will apply to Dhaka city and the whole of Bangladesh. Local administration and the government will then work together based on this policy.
