
PIROJPUR, July 14: A young woman raised at a government-run children's home in Pirojpur was married at a ceremony on Sunday evening, with the deputy commissioner (DC) played role as her guardian during the wedding.
The bride, 18-year-old Sohani Akter, a resident of the Government Children's Home (Shishu Paribar) was formally given away in marriage by DC Abu Sayeed, who performed the role of guardian at the ceremony.
The wedding was organised by the Department of Social Services (DoSS) with support from the district administration. The event, described by officials as the first of its kind at the institution, drew praise from local residents, many of whom lauded the initiative as a compassionate gesture for an orphaned young woman.
Sohani was married to Rakib Sheikh of Jujkhola Village in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila. The marriage was solemnised with a Denmohor of Tk 100,001.
Among those present at the ceremony were District Council Administrator Principal Alamgir Hossain, Additional District Magistrate Tanzila Kabir Trapa, Additional DC (Revenue) Israt Jahan, Additional DC (Local Government) Mahmudur Rahman Mamun, Deputy Director of the DoSS Iqbal Kabir, and Government Children's Home Deputy Superintendent Shabana Khanam.
Political leaders, journalists, staff members and other residents of the children's home also attended the event, creating a festive atmosphere. The marriage registrar conducted the ceremony, followed by prayers for the couple.
According to the DoSS, Sohani was admitted to the Government Children's Home in 2025 after losing both of her parents.
