Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities concerned to identify a suitable road in the capital to be named after former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died on July 12.
Taking part in a discussion in Parliament on Wednesday on a proposal moved by Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the Prime Minister said he had already instructed the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives to work with the Dhaka city corporations to identify an appropriate road.
"I have already verbally instructed the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development to identify a suitable road through the Dhaka city corporations and name it after the late Emir," he said, thanking the opposition leader for raising the proposal.
Paying tribute to the former Qatari Emir, Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh was honouring both the late leader and the people of Qatar.
"Qatar has supported Bangladesh in various ways throughout our development journey and continues to do so," he said.
He also noted that Qatar has provided employment opportunities for lakhs of Bangladeshis, making a significant contribution to the country's economy.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister sent Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, to Qatar on Tuesday to convey Bangladesh's condolences over the former Emir's death and express sympathy to the Qatari leadership and people.
On Wednesday, the Speaker met Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and handed over the Prime Minister's letter of condolence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
