A massive fire broke out in a child welfare home in Algeria, claiming 11 people, including children, died after a massive fire swept through a state-run child welfare home in east Algiers, Algeria. Al-Jazeera confirmed this news.

The incident also left 19 others injured.

According to emergency services, the blaze broke out at around 3:30AM local time on Thursday inside the Childhood Relief Institution in Mohammadia. The state-run centre serves as a sanctuary for orphans, abandoned minors, and children with special needs.

First responders treated 10 people for burns of varying severity. Two others received treatment for severe respiratory distress due to smoke inhalation.

Additionally, seven residents were treated for severe psychological shock. Rescue teams successfully evacuated five children with special needs to safety.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his deep condolences over the tragic deaths of the children.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the Mustapha Pacha University Hospital in Algiers to monitor the treatment of the injured.

Authorities have concluded the search operations and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
