A microbus caught fire in the Aricha-bound lane in front of Madhumoti Model Town on the Dhaka-Aricha highway at around 1:15 pm on Thursday.
The driver of the microbus, Roni Hossain, said, "I was going to Dhamrai from the Dhaka office with a reporter and a cameraperson to collect news of the Rath Yatra. When our car crossed Amin Bazar in Savar and reached the Madhumoti Model Town area, I realized that there was a gas line leakage. At that time, when the moving car braked to stop, the front part caught fire in an instant. Later, the three of us got out of the car and informed the fire service. However, the car was completely burnt before the fire service arrived.
According to eyewitnesses and fire service sources, a microbus was heading towards Savar at noon. When the vehicle reached the Madhumoti Model Town area, smoke suddenly started coming out of the engine of the moving vehicle. At that time, the driver quickly stopped the vehicle, but it caught fire. Within moments, the fire spread to the entire vehicle. Upon receiving the information, a unit of the Savar Fire Service quickly reached the spot and brought the fire under control after half an hour of effort.
Senior Station Officer of Savar Fire Service Jahangir Alam said, "After receiving the news of the fire, our team quickly reached the spot and started the work of controlling the fire. At that time, the fire was completely controlled after about half an hour of effort, but no casualties were reported. Initially, it is believed that the fire started due to an internal mechanical fault in the engine. Due to the quick action of the fire service, there was no long traffic jam on the highway and currently, traffic is normal in that lane.
