Playing hard, playing fair

Why Spain are favourites for FIFA's Fair Play Award

Winning the FIFA World Cup is football's ultimate achievement.
But there is another honour that every nation quietly values-the FIFA Fair Play Award.

Unlike trophies decided by goals or penalty shootouts, this award recognises discipline, respect, sportsmanship and the ability to compete fiercely without crossing the line.

As World Cup 2026 approaches its final, Spain appear to be the strongest candidates to take home that distinction.
Their football has been aggressive without becoming reckless.

Throughout the tournament, Spain have combined high pressing, intelligent positioning and technical quality while avoiding the kind of disciplinary problems that have affected many of their rivals. More importantly, they have stayed away from the major controversies that often define the latter stages of World Cups.

FIFA's Fair Play ranking is primarily based on disciplinary points.

Every yellow card reduces a team's score, while indirect and direct red cards carry significantly heavier penalties. Officials also assess the behaviour of players and coaching staff, respect shown towards opponents and referees, and the overall sporting spirit displayed during matches.

By those measures, Spain have consistently stood out.

They have completed six matches on their way to the final without receiving a red card. Their yellow-card count has remained among the lowest of the remaining teams, despite facing technically gifted opponents such as Belgium and France in the knockout rounds. Their calm approach has been equally impressive.

Spanish players have rarely surrounded referees to protest decisions, and the team has avoided the heated confrontations that have appeared in several other knockout fixtures. Even during tense moments, they have generally allowed their football to provide the response rather than their emotions.

That discipline has not weakened their competitiveness.

Spain remain one of the tournament's most effective pressing teams, regularly recovering possession high up the pitch while committing relatively few unnecessary fouls. Their defensive organisation has relied more on positioning than desperation, reducing the need for reckless challenges. Other semi-finalists have not been quite as consistent.

Argentina have shown admirable resilience and determination, but tactical fouls and more frequent cautions have increased their disciplinary total. England maintained excellent discipline for much of the tournament before a more physical semi-final against Argentina added to their card count. France, meanwhile, collected several cautions during the knockout rounds before their elimination.

The Fair Play Award has often gone to teams capable of balancing intensity with control.

Spain appear to fit that profile perfectly.

If they complete the final without major disciplinary incidents, they could leave the tournament with more than just a chance of lifting the World Cup trophy. They may also become the team recognised for playing the game in its finest spirit.

In modern football, where pressure, emotion and technology constantly test players' composure, remaining disciplined for an entire World Cup is an achievement in itself.

Spain have demonstrated that winning does not require losing control.

Whether or not they become world champions, their campaign has offered a reminder that football's greatest victories are not measured only by goals and trophies.

Sometimes, they are measured by the respect earned along the way.
