Hasan's county breakthrough adds weight to Bangladesh's winter pace plans

Hasan Mahmud was leaving Kent at a time when the English county season was still offering him more cricket, but Bangladesh had a bigger claim on his time.

The 26-year-old fast bowler will miss Kent's final two County Championship matches after the Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to bring him home ahead of a demanding winter programme. It is a decision driven partly by workload, but Hasan's return also comes with something Bangladesh badly needs before the next phase of its Test campaign: a fast bowler arriving in national duty with proven experience of sustained success in English conditions.

Hasan finished his county stint with 30 wickets in seven appearances across the Championship and Vitality Blast. His Championship return was particularly impressive, with 26 wickets in four matches. He also produced seven-wicket match hauls in each of his last two Championship outings.

That record changes the significance of his return. Hasan is no longer coming back simply as another member of Bangladesh's pace group. He is returning after a season in which he repeatedly demonstrated that he can operate effectively over long spells and across different phases of a match.

Kent's disappointment is understandable. The club is still fighting for promotion from Division Two and Hasan had become an important part of that push. Kent's director of cricket Simon Cook said the club respected the BCB's decision after discussions between the two sides.

For Bangladesh, however, the calculation is different.

Hasan has already been through a heavy sequence of cricket this year, including international and franchise assignments, before returning to county cricket. The BCB now wants to manage that workload rather than squeeze more cricket out of him.

That approach could prove important because Bangladesh's next Test assignments will demand more than short bursts of pace. A one-off Test against Afghanistan will be followed by two Tests against the West Indies and two more in South Africa. The South Africa tour will then continue with limited-overs cricket.

Hasan's county experience gives the selectors another useful option as they build the pace attack around a growing group of quicks. More importantly, his season in England has shown that his value can extend beyond being a strike bowler in short spells.

Bangladesh will need that version of Hasan when the Tests begin.

His early departure from Kent therefore represents more than the end of a successful county spell. It is a deliberate investment in a bowler whose development in England could now become part of Bangladesh's Test plans.
