Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested alleged shooter Tanim Reza alias Bappi and four of his associates in connection with extortion and a shooting incident in the capital’s Motijheel area. Police also recovered three foreign-made firearms, seven rounds of ammunition and other weapons during the operation.
According to Motijheel Division of DMP, Bappi (46), along with Mohammad Jewel (48), Shakil (27) and Md Manik Kazi (50), were arrested during a raid near Hotel Purbani in Motijheel around 7:00am on Friday (July 17). Later, based on information provided by the detainees and through technological assistance, police arrested another associate, Rakibul Islam Bhuiyan alias Rizon (35), from North Kamalapur at around 1:50pm the same day.
Police said the arrests were made in connection with a shooting incident targeting the office of a cattle market leaseholder in South Kamalapur on May 19. Before the incident, the businessman had allegedly received threats and a demand for Tk 10 lakh in extortion money through WhatsApp from a foreign number.
Following a case filed at Motijheel Police Station, investigators found evidence of Bappi and his associates’ involvement in the incident. Police said they had been in hiding for a long time, delaying their arrest.
Based on information from the arrested individuals, police later conducted a raid at Bappi’s office in South Kamalapur and recovered one foreign-made revolver, two foreign pistols, five rounds of revolver ammunition, two rounds of pistol ammunition, two magazines, an electric shock gun and a foreign Chinese axe.
A separate case has been filed under the Arms Act at Motijheel Police Station over the recovery of the weapons.
Police described Bappi as an alleged illegal arms carrier involved in various shooting incidents and extortion activities in the Motijheel area. They said he has seven cases filed against him with different DMP police stations, including allegations of extortion, robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder, violence against women and children, and drug-related offences.
Law enforcement authorities said legal action has been initiated against the arrested individuals, while efforts are continuing to arrest their other associates and recover additional illegal weapons.
