The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a show-cause notice to its lawmaker from the Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka) constituency, Fakhruddin Bacchu, over allegations of extortion, controlling the jute trade, and exerting influence over various business establishments.
A reliable BNP source confirmed the matter on Saturday.
According to the notice, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party has received allegations against Bacchu, including extortion, which have also been reported in various media outlets.
The notice asks him to explain within 48 hours why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
The notice also states that Bacchu had previously been relieved of his party responsibilities following various allegations that emerged after August 5. However, after he admitted his mistakes and sought forgiveness, the party withdrew the disciplinary order on September 30, 2025.
Speaking to The Daily Observer, Fakhruddin Bacchu said, "I came to know only a short while ago that I had been served with a show-cause notice. All the allegations against me are false. Neither I nor any member of my family is involved in the jute business. I have never demanded extortion money from any business establishment. The photograph being circulated to mislead people is not mine. It may have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI)."
