Man sentenced to death for murdering wife

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife by slitting her throat in the capital’s Middle Badda area nearly nine years ago.

Judge Md Sadequin Habib Bappi of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court pronounced the judgement and fined convict Monir Hossain Tk 100,000.

According to court officials, Monir had been on bail but was sent to jail after his bail was revoked following the conclusion of arguments on July 14.

The case documents stated that Monir married Shakila Khatun Soma in 2003, and the couple had a daughter. Over the years, he allegedly subjected Soma to physical and mental abuse and repeatedly demanded money from her family, who reportedly paid him Tk 1.1 million.


Police submitted the charge sheet on December 7, 2017 and the trial began in May 2018. During the proceedings, the court examined 15 of the 20 prosecution witnesses.
