Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for national unity to protect Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and democratic rights, urging people to uphold the spirit of the historic November 7 uprising.

In a message issued on Friday ahead of National Revolution and Solidarity Day, he said the country must pledge, in the spirit of November 7, that no one would be allowed to take away its independence, sovereignty or people’s rights.

Tarique Rahman said the November 7, 1975 uprising, in which soldiers and civilians joined forces, thwarted conspiracies against Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.

He also referred to the 2024 mass uprising, saying participation by people from all walks of life brought an end to what he described as fascist rule.

The prime minister said the 1971 Liberation War, the November 7 uprising, the 1990 anti-autocracy movement and the 2024 mass uprising were driven by the aspiration to establish people’s democratic rights.

He said the common goal of these historical movements was to secure people’s rights and build a self-reliant, secure and welfare-oriented state.

Calling on patriotic and pro-democracy citizens to put national interests first, he said: “Not Delhi, not Pindi, nor any other country — Bangladesh comes first.”

He expressed hope that the revolutionary spirit of November 7 would continue to inspire the country's future journey.
