A newborn baby found abandoned and wrapped in polythene in Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila has been officially placed in the care of a new family after legal formalities were completed, bringing the infant a safe and permanent home.

A newborn baby who was rescued after being found wrapped in polythene in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram has been officially handed over to a local auto-rickshaw driver and his wife, who rescued and cared for the child.

The handover took place on Friday (July 24) after the completion of the required legal procedures. The process was facilitated by a local social welfare organization, Maya Sangha.

The infant was discovered in the early hours of July 15 in the Konakhali area of Ward No. 8 under Shekherkhil Union. The baby was found abandoned in a polythene bag by the auto-rickshaw driver's family, who immediately rescued the child and arranged primary medical treatment through a local physician.

Gias Uddin Akbar Chowdhury, president of Maya Sangha, said the family that rescued the newborn had expressed a strong desire to raise the child. Following communication with the local administration and completion of the necessary legal procedures, custody of the infant was formally transferred to the couple.

The adoptive parents said they had become deeply attached to the baby after caring for the child for nearly two weeks.

"We have looked after the baby with love and affection since the rescue. We have grown emotionally attached and cannot imagine being separated from the child," the couple said.

According to local sources, the couple also has a five-month-old child, and they are capable of caring for the rescued newborn without difficulty.

Banshkhali Assistant Commissioner (Land) Omar Sani Akon said that after being informed about the matter, he advised the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the Upazila Social Services Office to take the necessary legal steps, which ultimately led to the formal transfer of custody.
