Fire at Savar paint warehouse doused after 7hrs, 5 injured

A major fire broke out at a paint short warehouse in a market near the Hemayetpur bus stand in Savar which left five injured.

Upon receiving the news, six firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after nearly seven and a half hours. At least five people including four firefighters were injured while attempting to extinguish the flames.

All goods inside the warehouse were gutted.

Earlier, the fire originated around 12:30AM on Saturday night at the paint warehouse owned by Altaf Hossain in the Hemayetpur area.

According to Fire Service personnel and locals, when the fire started at the paint-mixing chemical shop at midnight, locals initially attempted to extinguish it themselves. As the intensity of the fire increased, they notified the Tannery and Savar Fire Services.

Team Leader of Savar Fire Service Monowar Hossain said two units from Savar Fire Service initially rushed to the spot after getting the news. Later, four more units from Leather Industrial Park, EPZ, and Jirabo Modern Fire Stations joined the operation.

The six units brought the blaze under control around 7:30AM after continuous efforts for nearly seven hours. Meanwhile, frequent explosions caused by chemicals in the warehouse injured four firefighters.

The injured are Senior Station Officer of Tannery Fire Service Md. Shamim, firefighters Md. Uzzal and Omar Faruk, Savar Fire Service Team Leader Monowar Hossain, and local resident Mashiur Rahman. They were rescued and admitted to a local medical college hospital at night.

The critically injured Mashiur Rahman, 40 was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. However, he is currently out of danger.

Senior Station Officer of Savar Fire Service Jahangir Alam said initial information suggests an electrical short circuit triggered the fire. Warehouse owner Altaf Hossain claimed the fire caused damages worth around Tk 2.5 crore.

However, the exact extent of loss and cause of the fire cannot be confirmed without an investigation.

Commander of Fire Service Zone-4 Md. Hafizur Rahman said multiple explosions occurred during the operation due to combustible chemical substances in the paint warehouse. Four firefighters were injured in these blasts. He added that the lack of a nearby water source forced multiple units to coordinate closely to extinguish the fire.
