Five more die with measles symptoms in 24 hours

Five more people died with measles symptoms across the country in the 24 hours ending 8:00am Friday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the latest fatalities, the number of deaths with measles symptoms since March 15 has risen to 715, while 95 confirmed measles deaths have been recorded, taking the overall death toll to 810.

The DGHS said 950 new patients developed measles symptoms during the reporting period, bringing the total number of suspected cases to 122,150 since March 15.

During the same period, 187 new cases were laboratory-confirmed, raising the total number of confirmed measles infections to 15,194.

According to the health authorities, 104,717 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals since March 15, of whom 101,056 have recovered and been discharged.

The DGHS said no confirmed measles deaths were reported in the past 24 hours. Of the five deaths with measles symptoms, three were reported in Dhaka Division, one in Chattogram Division and one in Khulna Division.

The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier reported that Bangladesh recorded 42,174 measles or measles-like cases between December and May, the highest number reported by any country during that six-month period.
