In 2020 Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo included it in her election manifesto the 15 minutes city plan. After announcing the plan, the Paris city government launched several projects to turn the vision into reality. One of the biggest steps was expanding bicycle lanes across the city, making cycling a safer and more convenient way to travel.
The city also introduced more car-free streets to encourage walking and reduce traffic congestion. At the same time, local markets were strengthened so residents could shop closer to home instead of travelling long distances. Creating more green spaces was another important part of the plan. New parks were developed to provide residents with recreational areas and improve the quality of urban life.
Paris also focused on making education and healthcare services available in every neighborhood. The aim was to ensure that families could easily reach schools, clinics and other essential public services without relying on long daily commutes.
The Paris initiative quickly attracted international attention. Urban planners and city governments around the world began studying the model as a way to reduce traffic, cut pollution, improve public health and build more people-friendly cities.
Today, the 15-Minute City is considered one of the leading ideas in modern urban planning. Inspired by Paris, many cities are now exploring similar strategies to create neighborhoods where people can live, work, learn and enjoy daily life closer to home.
