UNO earns praise for returning Tk 1.02cr unspent canal excavation fund

Char Fasson Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Romana Afroz has set yet another example of accountability by returning Tk 1.02crore of unspent project funds to the national treasury.

Previously, a UNO from Goalando, Rajbari set the same example. She returned Tk nine lakh to the state exchequer.

The Char Fasson canal excavation project involved re-excavating a 3.7-kilometre canal stretching from Subal Doctor’s House to Sundari Bridge under the Employment Generation Programme for the Poorest (EGPP).

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief allocated Tk 2.06 crore for the scheme in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The work was completed following technical specifications and government guidelines. However, as the required width and depth were less than initially estimated in certain parts, the project was finished at a lower cost.

UNO Romana Afroze deposited the remaining Tk 1,02,35,249 back to the treasury in accordance with financial rules.

Local administration, civil society, and residents praised the initiative. Many expressed their appreciation on social media.

To protect environmental balance, saplings were also planted along the canal banks.

Local farmer Mamun Majhi said farmers previously struggled with high irrigation costs due to stagnant water. The re-excavated canal now ensures smooth irrigation and better crop yields, he added.

UNO Romana Afroze said the long-neglected canal was silted up, causing severe waterlogging. Re-excavation restored water flow, improved drainage, and created new agricultural opportunities.

She reaffirmed the upazila administration's commitment to financial discipline and preventing the wastage of public money.
