50 journalists attacked in July, 19 received death threats

Fifty journalists faced various forms of abuse across Bangladesh in July, with 91.4 percent of the incidents occurring at the district and upazila levels, according to a monitoring report by the Media Initiative for Development (MID).

MID released its July 2026 monitoring report on attacks on journalists on Saturday.

The report recorded 39 incidents involving journalists during the month. Death threats were the most common, accounting for 19 cases, or 48.7 percent of the total. Physical attacks were reported in 11 cases, legal harassment or cases in six, and shootings or attempted murders in three.

MID said death threats are increasingly being used to intimidate journalists and discourage them from publishing news, while threats, attacks, legal cases and other forms of violence are also being used together.

Of the 39 incidents, 32 occurred at the district and upazila levels, while seven took place in the capital or metropolitan areas, making local journalists particularly vulnerable, the report said.

According to the report, those involved included local leaders and activists of different political parties, land grabbers, illegal sand extractors, drug traders and, in some cases, government officials and members of the administration.

Reporting on corruption and irregularities, political conflicts and retaliation for published reports were identified as the main reasons behind the attacks.

GDs were filed in 18 of the 39 incidents, but only five resulted in formal cases. Only two accused persons were arrested, the report said, noting that the lack of progress in most cases is reinforcing a culture of impunity.

MID Executive Director Rashedul Hasan said journalists at the district and upazila levels face the greatest risks and called for greater attention to their safety.

He said ensuring a safe working environment for journalists is a constitutional responsibility of the state, while political parties, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, media organisations and civil society must work together to ensure their safety.
