DU suspended prof Bahauddin rejected allegation of defying class ban

Dhaka University’s (DU) Persian Language and Literature department professor Dr. Mohammad Bahauddin who was suspended over alleged irregularities and plagiarism rejected allegation of defying a ban on academic activities.
He was barred from all academic and administrative duties on July 28 following a syndicate decision. However, an anonymous complainant alleged that he continued taking classes despite the directive, prompting further scrutiny.
Department chairperson Dr. Md. Mumit Al Rashid, confirmed receiving official suspension letter after 11AM on Sunday. He said that action was taken immediately upon receipt, including removing Dr. Bahauddin from his course coordinator role.
Dr. Rashid said, “Professor Bahauddin came to the department to complete pending work, including attendance records and marks, before the official letter arrived. After receiving the letter, I cannot say for certain whether he conducted any classes. I do not think he did, because by then most classes had already ended and an inter-departmental football tournament was underway. Besides, attendance registers remain with individual teachers throughout the semester and are only submitted to the department at the end of the term, so it is not possible to verify that immediately.”
Prof Bahauddin denied the allegations, saying that he received official suspension letter on Saturday. He said, I had two scheduled classes that day, an 11AM presentation for first-semester students and a 12PM class for MA second-semester students. But, I did not conduct either, informing students that his inability to teach was an administrative decision.
He said, “These allegations are malicious. I feel like a 'dead person' because I have been suspended from my academic duties. I have served this department for 31 years, including three years as chairman, yet the suspension letter only mentions 'various irregularities' without specifying any charges. It is unfortunate that I have been suspended just as the time has come to conduct examinations, set question papers, and evaluate answer scripts”.
Arts faculty acting dean Prof Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarker said, “Professor Bahauddin posted in our teachers’ group on Thursday morning that disciplinary action had been taken against him. So, it cannot be said that he was completely unaware of the matter. If he knew about the decision, even without receiving the official letter, then taking classes would not have been ethically appropriate. However, if he genuinely did not know and had not received the official letter, that would be a different matter.”
Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed said, “The syndicate meeting was held on July 28. After the meeting, the resolution has to be prepared, signed and finalised before official letters can be issued. Since a syndicate meeting involves many agenda items, preparing the resolution takes some time. Only after it is finalised are the letters dispatched.”
