Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said that, the government is making simultaneous legal and diplomatic efforts to bring former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed back to Bangladesh from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Speaking at a press briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat he said the government believes the banned Awami League does not have the capacity to carry out sabotage. In addition, he assured that there is no reason for public panic over the recent recovery of bomb-like objects under metro rail pillars.

Regarding Benazir Ahmed's return, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government is using diplomatic channels alongside the legal process to facilitate his return.

He said a court in the UAE has granted Benazir conditional bail to prevent him from leaving the country.

The Home Minister said the government has already instructed a law firm in the UAE to collect a certified copy of the court order and immediately apply for cancellation of the bail.

He added that the necessary documents are also being prepared to formally bring Benazir back to Bangladesh.

Salahuddin Ahmed said the government suspects that the former police chief may hold passports from more than one country. He said this issue is being taken into account while preparing the government's legal strategy.
