BIBM holds seminar on remittance utilisation and household financing in Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) organised a seminar on "Remittance Utilization and Household Financing in Bangladesh" at its auditorium in Mirpur, Dhaka, bringing together policymakers, central bankers, commercial bankers, researchers and academics to deliberate on the role of remittances in promoting household welfare, financial inclusion and sustainable economic development.

Md Sarwar Hossain, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, attended the seminar as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the event. In his inaugural address, he highlighted the growing importance of remittance inflows in supporting Bangladesh's macroeconomic stability and emphasized the need for strengthening formal remittance channels and promoting productive utilization of remittance income, says a press release. 

The seminar commenced with a welcome address by Md Shihab Uddin Khan, Professor and Director (Research, Development and Consultancy), BIBM, who underscored the significance of evidence-based research in formulating effective policies for enhancing the developmental impact of remittances.

The keynote research paper was presented by a BIBM research team led by Dr Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Professor (Selection Grade). The research team comprised Md Nehal Ahmed, Professor (Selection Grade);  Md Mahbubur Rahman Alam, Professor and Director, Dhaka School of Bank Management; Rexona Yesmin, Assistant Professor; and Md Foysal Hasan, Assistant Professor, all of BIBM.

The study examined the patterns of remittance utilization by recipient households, its contribution to household financing, consumption, savings and investment, and explored policy measures to improve the productive use of remittance inflows for long-term economic development.

Following the presentation, an interactive discussion session was held featuring Md Ali Hossain Prodhania, Supernumerary Professor, BIBM; Hassan O Rashid, Managing Director, Eastern Bank PLC as designated discussants. Participants from banks, financial institutions, academia and research organizations also took part in an open-floor discussion, sharing their views and recommendations.

Delivering the concluding remarks as Chair of the seminar, Dr Md Ezazul Islam, Director General of BIBM, observed that remittances remain one of the strongest pillars of Bangladesh's economy, particularly in supporting rural households through enhanced consumption, education, healthcare, savings and small-scale investment. He stressed the importance of developing appropriate financial products, strengthening financial literacy and adopting supportive policy measures to channel remittance income toward productive investment, entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth.
