
A recent study has revealed that 26 out of 34 toothpaste samples tested in Bangladesh contained microplastics. The number of these tiny plastic particles ranged from 20 to 320 per 100 grams of toothpaste. Alarmingly, four out of six toothpastes manufactured for children were also found to contain microplastics. These findings were published in a new study conducted by the Environment and Social Development Organisation (ESDO). According to the researchers, the presence of microplastics in toothpaste raises serious concerns about potential risks to both human health and the environment. The researchers emphasised that microplastics should not be present in toothpaste under any circumstances.
The research was conducted between July 2025 and June 2026 and analysed 34 toothpaste samples representing 19 major brands manufactured in Bangladesh, India, Thailand, and Vietnam. Among the 25 toothpaste samples produced in Bangladesh, 22 contained microplastics. Of the 34 samples, six were children's toothpastes. Four of these contained between 20 and 140 microplastic particles per 100 grams. Presenting the findings, Dr Foyzun Nahar, Research and Policy Associate at ESDO, said that the samples had been collected from retail stores, supermarkets, and wholesale markets. The laboratory analyses were carried out at the Laboratory of Environmental Health and Ecotoxicology, Jahangirnagar University. She reported that 76.5 per cent of the tested toothpaste samples contained microplastics. According to the research report, growing scientific evidence suggests that microplastics may affect the respiratory system, digestive system, immune system, cardiovascular system, and nervous system. Potential health impacts include inflammation, organ damage, hormonal disruption, reduced fertility, and adverse effects on fatal development.
As part of the study, ESDO also conducted a survey involving 2,760 participants. The survey found that 42 per cent of respondents had never heard of microplastics, while 27 per cent reported that they were aware of the issue. Shahriar Hossain, Secretary General of ESDO, alleged that some manufacturers intentionally use microplastics in toothpaste to reduce raw material costs. He stated, “This is done deliberately to lower production costs. It is unethical and amounts to deceiving consumers. Under consumer protection laws, such practices are generally punishable offenses.” When asked to explain the use of this harmful ingredient, the companies reportedly responded that Bangladesh currently has no regulations specifically prohibiting the use of microplastics in toothpaste, Shahriar Hossain added. Professor Mosharraf Hossain Khondkar, a dental specialist and former Line Director of the Directorate General of Medical Education, said that microplastics are sometimes added to toothpaste for their whitening effect. However, he warned that such products may be harmful. He explained, “The mouth is the entry point for both food and germs. If oral health is compromised, a person’s overall health may also be affected.”

According to ESDO, Bangladesh currently has no established permissible limit for microplastics in toothpaste. The organisation has recommended introducing national regulations, standardised testing methods, and mandatory compliance requirements for manufacturers. ESDO has also called for the gradual phase-out and eventual ban on the intentional use of microplastics in toothpaste, while promoting the adoption of safe and sustainable alternatives.
Syed Margub Murshed, Chairperson of ESDO, said that this is the first baseline study on microplastics in toothpaste in Bangladesh. He noted that the findings will provide valuable scientific evidence to support the development of standards, strengthen regulatory oversight, and protect both consumers and the environment. Siddika Sultana, Executive Director of ESDO, said that the study fills an important scientific knowledge gap in Bangladesh. She expressed hope that the relevant authorities would take appropriate regulatory measures in response to these findings.
Although the discussion initially focused on toothpaste, recent research has revealed that microplastics have also been detected in soybean oil and sugar. More extensive research may reveal that microplastics have contaminated the majority of the food we eat. In simple terms, we seem to be living in a sea of microplastics, with constant exposure through our daily lives.
Scientists have recently reported discovering extremely small plastic particles in water samples collected from different parts of the world. These particles, known as microplastics, are too tiny to be seen without special equipment and are very difficult to remove from water. Once they enter rivers, lakes, and oceans, fish and other aquatic animals consume them, allowing the plastic to move through the food chain. What is even more alarming is that microplastics have also been detected in drinking water worldwide. As a result, people unknowingly consume small amounts of plastic every day. Researchers are still uncertain about the long-term effects these particles may have on human health.
Microplastics originate from several sources. A major source is the washing and drying of clothes made from synthetic fibres. They are also released from personal care and household products, including toothpaste, facial cleansers, and other cosmetic items. In addition, these tiny plastic particles have been found not only in water but also in the air around us and inside our homes.
Many countries now recognise that our heavy dependence on plastic is unsustainable. It is essential to develop effective methods to remove microplastics from oceans and other water bodies. Governments should also introduce policies, including taxes and incentives, to encourage manufacturers to use environmentally friendly materials and recyclable packaging when producing goods.
Individuals also have an important role to play in reducing plastic pollution. Through our purchasing decisions, we can support businesses that follow environmentally responsible practices. By working together and making thoughtful choices, we can help protect the environment for both present and future generations. We should always remember the three important principles: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
