Govt approves in principle purchase of 200 electric buses for BRTC without tender

The government has given in-principle approval to procure 200 electric buses for Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) through direct procurement, without a tender.

The buses, including dedicated services for women passengers, will be accompanied by charging stations and other necessary infrastructure.

The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs at the Secretariat on Thursday (August 6), chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

According to meeting sources, the proposal was submitted by the Road Transport and Highways Department. The project will be funded by the government.

The initiative is part of the government's plan to introduce environment-friendly public transport in Dhaka and other divisional cities. The department said electric buses could help reduce fuel costs and air pollution while improving passenger services and lowering operating costs in the long term.

Earlier, the department had sought Tk400 crore from the Finance Ministry to procure 100 electric buses, install 25 charging stations and develop related infrastructure in the first phase.

The proposed cost for the 100-bus project includes Tk250 crore for buses, Tk50 crore for charging stations, Tk35 crore for equipment and spare parts, Tk20 crore for training and technical assistance, Tk25 crore for transportation, registration and related expenses, and Tk20 crore for depot development and repairs.

The Road Transport and Highways Department said the electric bus initiative would reduce dependence on imported fuel, help curb air pollution and support the development of a more sustainable public transport system.
