Shanghai’s main airports canceled over 1,300 flights on Sunday while Chinese authorities relocated nearly 300,000 people as Typhoon Dolphin closed in on the eastern coast.

According to a report by AP news, the storm lashed northern Taiwan with heavy rain on Saturday before moving toward mainland China.

Taiwanese carriers also grounded several mainland-bound flights.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 162 km/h, the typhoon is expected to make landfall late Sunday in Zhejiang province and northern Fujian. Meteorologists warned of severe flood risks and landslides, predicting 200-400 mm of rainfall across affected regions.

State media reported that Pudong and Hongqiao airports in Shanghai grounded roughly 60 per cent of scheduled Sunday flights.

Local authorities in Zhejiang evacuated 390,000 residents from Taizhou city, while Shanghai officials moved more than 30,000 people from high-risk zones. Maritime authorities in Zhejiang also halted all passenger ferries, cruises, and water activities.
