A Bomb Disposal Squad of Bangladesh Army has unearthed and , later, defused 90 mines, out of which 17 mines were anti-tank and 73 anti-personnel mines, at Betbaria village of Gangni upazila in Meherpur district.

The bomb disposal unit Army unearthed these mines from a deserted piece of land on Monday noon after local residents discovered some mine-like objects there. After recovery, the bomb disposal unit then transported the mines to the bank of Mathabhanga River at Betbaria-Madhugari and defused those around 6PM.

Due to defusing of mines, huge noise could be heard, and the houses located nearby shook due to the blasts.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station Shimul Kumar told that these mines were dug up one by one from the soil. The area was cordoned off by police, BGB, RAB and Village Police, following the discovery on Saturday.

Some mine-like objects were found to bear marks that could indicate their old military origin, according to local people. Police then informed about this matter to Jashore Cantonment.

Residents and a freedom fighter claimed that these mines reminded them of mines planted here during the liberation war of 1971.
