Tk 43.8m ‘embezzled’ from Agrani Bank vault in Ctg

 
A bank official and another man have been handed over to police after more than Tk 43.8 million was allegedly embezzled from Agrani Bank’s Laldighi East Corporate Branch in Chattogram by replacing Tk 1,000 notes in bundles with smaller denominations.
The bank authorities handed them to police over the alleged embezzlement.
The suspects are Kamrul Islam, 41, a senior officer and cash-in-charge of the branch, and Jafar Ullah Tanvir, 25.
Kotwali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Iqbal Hossain told bdnews24.com that a case was filed on Monday over the alleged embezzlement of Tk 43.8 million from the bank vault.
Bank authorities have blamed Kamrul, who was responsible for the vault.
“They were shown arrested on Monday and sent to jail through the court,” Iqbal said.
He said the investigation into the case is underway.
Based on information obtained during questioning, police said Kamrul allegedly used to place Tk 100 or smaller-denomination notes inside bundles labelled as Tk 1,000 notes when depositing cash in the vault. He then allegedly prepared fabricated accounts to make the figures appear to match.
Although bundles of cash could be seen inside the vault, the actual amount of money was allegedly missing.
Police said Kamrul used money allegedly embezzled from the vault to set up a cattle farm called Ishrat Agro in Hathazari Upazila through his acquaintance Jafar. The farm has 50 to 60 cattle of different breeds.
The case was filed by Agrani Bank Chattogram General Manager Mostak Ahmed.
According to the complaint, the alleged embezzlement took place between Jun 1 last year and Aug 9 this year, with the money allegedly invested in the cattle farm.
According to the case details, the shortage was detected on Aug 9 when the bank’s cash was reconciled after regular banking operations and transactions ended.
Bank officials then questioned Kamrul, who was responsible for the branch’s cash and vault.
He allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation and began delaying when asked to account for the missing money.
