Pakistan Independence Day observed at High Commission in Dhaka

Pakistan Independence Day was observed at the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka on Friday with a programme attended by members of the Pakistani community, Bangladeshi friends and well-wishers, students, journalists and civil society representatives.
The programme began with Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider hoisting the national flag at the High Commission premises as the national anthem was played, according to a press release.
Messages from Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar were read out during the programme.
In their messages, the Pakistani leadership extended greetings to Pakistanis at home and abroad and paid tribute to the country’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal and those who contributed to the Pakistan Movement.
The leadership highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in education, science and technology, sports and defence since independence, while stressing the importance of upholding the principles of “Unity, Faith and Discipline” to achieve the country’s development goals.
Tributes were also paid to members of Pakistan’s armed forces and law-enforcement agencies for their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. The leadership referred to the success of Operation Marak-e-Haq against India and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The messages also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and its stated commitment to resolving the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Concern was also expressed over what the Pakistani leadership described as terrorism against neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, originating from Afghan territory.
As part of the celebrations, prizes and certificates were distributed among Bangladeshi students who participated in an essay competition titled “Historical Sites in Pakistan”, organised by the Pakistan High Commission.
The programme concluded with special prayers for peace, progress and prosperity in Pakistan.
