The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized 4,129,600 metres of illegal fishing nets worth around Tk 17.69 crore, 2,231 kg of hilsa and four fishing boats during an operation to protect mother hilsa in 16 districts on Sunday.
The operation, titled “Ma Ilish Conservation Campaign 2026”, was conducted in 54 upazilas under the Coast Guard’s jurisdiction to enforce the government’s fishing ban.
The seized nets were later burned and destroyed, according to the Coast Guard.
The operation was carried out on October 11 as part of efforts to protect mother hilsa during the government-imposed fishing ban.
