Barapukuria power unit shuts again

Published : Saturday, 15 August, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Amid load shedding across the country, electricity generation at Unit 1 of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur was suspended again on Friday due to a mechanical glitch.
The 125-megawatt unit stopped generating electricity at around 11am, said Abu Bakkar Siddique, chief engineer of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant.
He said power generation was suspended after two pumps malfunctioned. One of the pumps had already broken down, and after it was repaired and the unit was brought back into operation, the other pump also malfunctioned, forcing a complete shutdown.
The chief engineer hoped repairs could be completed quickly and the unit could resume generation by Friday, or Saturday at the latest.
Meanwhile, Unit 3, with a generation capacity of 275MW, continues to operate, he said.
Power generation at Unit 1 was previously suspended on Jul 31 due to a mechanical fault. Following repairs, it resumed operation on Aug 2.
The Barapukuria coal-fired thermal power plant has a total generation capacity of 525MW. Units 1 and 2 have capacities of 125MW each, while Unit 3 has a capacity of 275MW.    "bdnews24
