1m AI cameras to be installed nationwide at Tk 1,300cr

Police are planning to install one million artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras across the country to curb crime, maintain law and order and improve traffic management.

The cameras will cover all 64 districts, metropolitan areas and major highways. The project is estimated to cost around Tk 1,300 crore and is expected to be completed within two years.

According to police headquarters sources, the cameras will be capable of identifying suspects and vehicle number plates, detecting traffic violations and flagging suspicious activity in real time. Facial recognition technology will also be used to identify wanted criminals, convicted offenders and missing persons.

DMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Anisur Rahman said 37 AI cameras had already been installed at 16 points in Dhaka. The number is expected to increase to more than 200 points within six months.

Unlike conventional CCTV cameras, AI cameras can automatically analyse footage and detect speeding, signal violations, wrong-way driving, helmet violations and other traffic offences. The system can generate e-cases and send information to vehicle owners by SMS, with the software already linked to the BRTA server.

Police also plan to use the system to track stolen vehicles and fleeing suspects through number-plate recognition and to identify missing children and abducted persons using facial recognition.

The camera network is also planned to be linked with the national emergency service 999 database so that control rooms can access live footage from cameras near reported incidents.
