Bangladesh, IOM sign project to combat technology-enabled human trafficking

Bangladesh and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a 24-month project agreement to strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent and combat human trafficking facilitated by digital technology.

The agreement was signed on Sunday by Economic Relations Division Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiqui and IOM Bangladesh Chief of Mission Dr Laura Tom Benn.

The project, titled “Combating Human Trafficking through Cyber Technology”, will be funded by the IOM Development Fund and implemented by IOM Bangladesh in partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

It will focus on strengthening the evidence and knowledge base on technology-enabled trafficking, building the capacity of law enforcement agencies, and improving digital awareness and skills in communities.

Traffickers increasingly use social media, online platforms and job portals to identify, lure, control and exploit victims, according to the project organisers.

IOM Bangladesh Chief of Mission Laura Tom Benn said the project would help build the evidence, skills and awareness needed to ensure technology becomes part of the solution rather than a tool for exploitation.

ERD Secretary Shahriar Kader Siddiqui said the project would support the government’s efforts to prevent the misuse of technology for trafficking and use technology more effectively to combat the crime.
