The verdict in a corruption case against Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana and seven others over irregularities in the construction of the building in Savar has been deferred to September 1.

Dhaka Divisional Special Judge BM Tariqul Kabir was scheduled to deliver the verdict on Sunday but postponed it as the judgment was not ready.

The other accused are former Savar mayor Refat Ullah, former municipal chief executive officer Uttam Kumar Roy, executive engineer Rafiqul Islam, former assistant engineer Mahbubur Rahman, former sub-assistant engineer Rakibul Hasan Russell, former town planner Farzana Islam and licence inspector Md Abdul Motalib.

Sohel Rana is on bail in the corruption case but remains in jail in a murder case. He was produced before the court on Sunday. Two other accused, Mahbubur Rahman and Farzana Islam, have been absconding, while the remaining accused are out on bail.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case in 2014, alleging irregularities in the construction and approval of Rana Plaza. The building collapsed on April 24, 2013, killing more than 1,100 people and injuring over 1,500 others.

The prosecution alleged that Savar municipality approved a six-storey shopping complex in 2006 but later approved a 10-storey structure after opening new documents and withholding earlier records. Five garment factories were also allowed to operate in the building, although it had initially been approved as a shopping complex.

The court framed charges against the accused in May 2017. Of 20 prosecution witnesses, 19 have testified.

Sohel Rana is also facing separate cases over the Rana Plaza collapse, including charges of murder and violation of building regulations.
