A Dhaka court on Monday placed two suspected members of militant outfit Dawlatul Islam on remand in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed with Demra Police Station.
The accused are Jewel Bhuiyan alias Ostad(27) and Md Arif Chowdhury(24). Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam granted three days remand for Jewel and two days for Arif following a police plea.
According to the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), the two were arrested in Sarulia on Sunday after police received information that a group was allegedly planning sabotage. Police said two suspected explosive devices were recovered from them and later safely disposed of by the DMP’s bomb disposal unit.
Police also seized two mobile phones and other items from the suspects. The ATU claimed the accused told investigators during preliminary questioning that they were active members of Dawlatul Islam.
Police said the remand was sought to identify other members, uncover the alleged sabotage plan and investigate the case further. No lawyer appeared for the accused.
