Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is not taking into consideration a recent UN warning about al-Qaeda activities in Bangladesh, saying the report is based on speculation.

“I have heard about it, but I have not read the report. There may be some observations in it. I cannot comment without seeing it,” he told reporters on Monday.

Asked whether the government was taking the report seriously, Salahuddin said, “We are not taking it into consideration. I have not read the report yet. From what I have heard from newspapers, it says they have speculated that this could happen.”

“We cannot rely on a report based on speculation,” he added.

The minister was responding to questions about a recent UN Security Council warning that al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) was seeking to use Bangladesh to establish a terrorist cell.

Asked about rumours that he could be moved to another ministry, Salahuddin said, “I have heard the rumours too.”

Earlier, he highlighted the government’s achievements in various sectors since the BNP took charge of the country.
