A Dhaka court on Monday placed two suspected members of the banned militant group ‘Dawlatul Islam’ on separate terms of remand after they were arrested with two detonators in Demra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam ordered Jewel Bhuiyan, 27, to three days’ remand and Arif Chowdhury, 24, to two days’ remand following a police petition.
The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) arrested the two from the West Boxnagar area of Demra on Sunday based on intelligence information. Police said two live detonators wrapped in black tape were recovered from them. A bomb disposal team of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit later neutralised the devices.
The case was filed with Demra Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act by ATU Sub-Inspector Palash Ali.
According to the investigation officer, the suspects initially told police that they were active members of ‘Dawlatul Islam’ and had gathered to plan acts aimed at disrupting public safety and destabilising the country.
Police sought 10 days’ remand for Jewel and five days for Arif. However, the court granted three and two days respectively.
No lawyer appeared for the accused during the hearing.
