Workers of Itadi Jeans factory blocked a road in the Aturar Depot area of Chattogram on Wednesday morning, demanding payment of overdue wages and fulfilment of other demands.

The workers took position on the main road, disrupting traffic and causing severe congestion. Commuters and other passengers suffered as a result.

The workers alleged that their wages and allowances have remained unpaid for a long time and that the factory authorities have failed to meet their other legitimate demands.

They said they would announce tougher programmes if their outstanding wages were not paid and their demands addressed promptly.

Police and other law enforcement personnel went to the spot and tried to restore normal traffic. Industrial Police Chattogram Superintendent of Police Mahmuda Begum said workers were protesting over unpaid wages and other demands.

“Police and local law enforcement are at the spot and working to control the situation. We are trying to reach a settlement by holding talks with both sides,” she said.
