The government is set to begin collecting data on all engine-powered vessels across the country from Thursday as part of its first-ever nationwide vessel census.

The data collection will be conducted under the “Vessel Database Creation and Capacity Enhancement in Vessel Management” project being implemented by the Department of Shipping under the Ministry of Shipping.

According to a ministry notice issued on Wednesday, the “Vessel Census 2026” will run from August 20 to 29 across the country.

The Department of Shipping and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will jointly conduct the census to collect updated information on all engine-powered vessels operating in the country’s maritime, coastal and inland waters.

The census will collect information including the number and types of vessels, ownership and registration.

The resulting database is expected to support planning, management, safety measures and policymaking in the shipping sector.

The initiative will also provide a reliable and updated statistical picture of the country’s vessel sector, helping improve vessel registration and management, strengthen maritime safety and improve waterway management.

The ministry has urged vessel owners, masters, workers and other stakeholders to cooperate with census personnel appointed by the BBS and provide accurate information.

The government expects the census to provide a stronger factual basis for future development planning and management of the country’s shipping sector.
