Seventeen years after the High Court directed the government to enact a law against sexual harassment, Bangladesh is still without a full-fledged law on the issue. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad called for the law to be enacted and implemented without further delay.
The demand was made at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday. Advocate Masuda Rehana Begum, Joint General Secretary of Mahila Parishad read out a written statement.
On 14 May 2009, the High Court directed the authorities to form complaint committees at educational institutions and workplaces following a writ petition by the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association. The court also directed the government to enact a law.
Mahila Parishad said it had been demanding such a law since 2002. It later prepared a draft and submitted it to the Law Commission and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in 2010.
