The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be held this year as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) does not have enough time to organise the tournament properly, BCB President Tamim Iqbal said on Thursday.
Tamim made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Mirpur after the formal announcement of the Game Development Trophy involving Bangladesh’s Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 teams. Asked whether the board had enough time to organise the BPL this year, he said, “I don’t think so. The BPL will not be held this year.”
The BPL is the biggest source of income for many Bangladeshi cricketers. Tamim acknowledged that cancelling the tournament would cause financial losses for players. “If I were a player, I would be disappointed too. I do not deny that they will suffer financially,” he said. However, he added that the tournament needed to be organised in a way that the BCB could take pride in.
Tamim said the board did not want to rush into organising what he described as a troubled tournament. The BPL has faced criticism over player payments, franchise fee irregularities and broadcasting-related problems since its inception. According to Tamim, the BCB incurred losses of around Tk 40 crore from organising the last two editions of the tournament.
“Our intention to hold the BPL is 1,000 percent,” Tamim said. “But I do not want to rush. I want to do it properly. If it takes six months or 12 months, I will take that time.”
The BCB president said players also wanted the tournament to be organised properly, although their reasoning might differ. He described the BPL as a “great product” with significant public interest and said improving its organisation could further increase that interest.
The BPL is usually held in December-January. Asked whether the board would organise an alternative competition during that period, Tamim said the BCB was working on a new formula for its domestic cricket calendar.
“We are working on a formula. When 60-70 percent of the work is done, I will announce how we are arranging our domestic calendar. It will be quite different and interesting,” he said.
