North Korea has between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, according to South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-baek, a figure significantly higher than the 57 nuclear weapons cited by US President Donald Trump.
Speaking to a parliamentary committee on Thursday, Ahn said South Korea generally estimates that Pyongyang possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, although the exact number remains unknown. “We generally see the number as 80 to 120. However, there is very limited opportunity to estimate the actual number,” he said.
Ahn later clarified that the estimate was based on assessments by private research organisations and that the South Korean military also does not have precise information on North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.
Asked about Trump’s statement that North Korea possesses 57 highly powerful nuclear weapons, Ahn said the figure “seems somewhat different” from South Korea’s assessment.
Trump made the estimate on Wednesday while speaking at the White House about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the possibility of meeting him.
South Korea does not officially recognise North Korea as a nuclear-weapon state. Asked whether the government would now recognise Pyongyang as a nuclear state following the defense minister’s estimate, Ahn said, “I cannot officially recognise them as such.”
