The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has begun its return voyage to San Diego following nearly 275 days at sea, ending an extended deployment that drew intense political scrutiny and reports of difficult living conditions onboard.

The ship is returning to Naval Air Station North Island after being relieved in the Middle East by the Japan-based USS George Washington, which joins the USS George H. W. Bush in the region.

The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego on November 21, 2025, for what was originally scheduled as a seven-month mission. However, its extended tenure at sea sparked criticism following allegations of food shortages, water contamination, and broken sanitation facilities.

Public concern mounted following an August 3 incident in which a sailor wearing a life vest went overboard during a mental health episode. The sailor was rescued unharmed.

Responding to the reports, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressing serious concern over the crew's welfare.

In response, Hegseth stated that reports regarding onboard conditions were "completely misrepresented" and confirmed he had spoken directly with the crew.

Former US President Donald Trump commented on the deployment at Joint Base Andrews, stating that the ship had not been deployed "nearly long enough" compared to historic military deployments, though he acknowledged the crew had served a significant period at sea.

Meanwhile, Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao commended the crew's service, confirming their planned rotation home and emphasizing that sailor safety remains a top priority.

Commander of US Central Command Admiral Brad Cooper visited the vessel and praised the crew's performance, describing the mission as one of the most operationally intense deployments in modern naval history.

The rotation comes as the US Navy continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, an operation Hegseth stated the US military is prepared to sustain indefinitely.
