Man held for killing stepdaughter at Ghoraghat

GHORAGHAT, DINAJPUR, Aug 21: The police have arrested a man Shafiul Islam, 40, from Palashbari bus stand in Gaibandha District early Thursday for allegedly killing his stepdaughter Taspiya, 9, by throwing her into the Karatoa River in Ghoraghat Upazila of Dinajpur on Wednesday.

The police said the killer took her with him saying that he will admit her to a madrasa. Later, he threw her into the Karatoa River from a boat. Later, he picked her up, but at one point during an argument with his wife on the mobile phone, he threw the child back into the river.

Local sources said that Taspiya’s mother Liza and her father Mominul separated in 2022. Later, Liza married Shafiul and brought Taspiya to her in 2025. After that, they left the child with her step-grandparents and moved to Dhaka to earn a living.

OC of Ghoraghat Police Station Shahidul Islam said that during initial interrogation, Shafiul confessed to his involvement in the murder.
