40 vagrants, beggars detained in airport area

Police detained 40 vagrants and beggars during a drive in and around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday.

The operation was conducted by the Airport Police Station in areas including the airport roundabout, BRTA station, airport railway station, nearby police box, airport entrance and VIP Road.

According to DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi, those detained include 15 children, two women and 23 adult men.

He said the detained children were being sent to a child and adolescent shelter in Mirpur, while proceedings were underway to send the adults to a special court.

Mehedi said the presence of vagrants and beggars in the airport area had long been a problem, causing discomfort for both local and foreign passengers. The latest drive was part of regular operations to address the issue, he added.

Police have detained around 288 more vagrants and beggars in similar drives over the past few days, bringing the total number detained to 328, he said.

The detained adults were sent to jail through the special court, while the children were taken to the Mirpur shelter, Mehedi said.

He added that such drives would continue to ensure smooth movement and overall security for passengers in the airport area.
